Once upon a time street sweepers in San Francisco reportedly made $17 per hour, and this was in the 1970s. Imagine sweeping streets all day with a pushbroom and making the equivalent of $50 an hour by today's standards, more-or-less. This job required a strong back, strong arms, and strong legs, and an ability to stand and walk for 8 hours a day. As you might expect, the city experienced little turnover.

Now we have crime scene cleanup's growing popularity on TV and in Internet articles. Judging by the many telephone calls I get every day, I'd say that a lot of people want to be crime scene cleaners. Do they want to cleanup blood and gore for fun and profit?

All that I can say, "There are no crime scene cleanup jobs." Now this sounds dogmatic and it sounds to me like it smacks of a dogmatic statement. How would I know that there are no crime scene cleanup jobs? In this universe I cannot possibly know that there are no crime scene cleanup jobs. No way!

Still, It's fairly safe to say in goodfaith that so few crime scene cleanup jobs exist that 99.9% of crime scene cleanup job seekers waste their time. They would find work sweeping streets in San Fransciso sooner. Possibly, their odds are greater of a lightning strike to the forehead.

So, if someone has performed a song and dance praising the virtures of the great need for crime scene cleaners, you listened too long.

Did they say stuff like this:

• People die every day.
• People get killed every day.
• People commit suicide every day.
• People decompose every day.
• People must have protection from germs.
• People make $100 per hour in crime scene cleanup.

Did they say that most people die in hospitals? Did they say that companies have been around for several decades and that they have inside contacts with coroners' employees, public administrator employees, and medical examiners' employees? I've seen it, I've heard it, and I've read about it right here in Orange County, California.

Unless you have one of the following you are not going to become a crime scene cleaner, unless you are prepared to become homeless as you try:

1. You know someone in the coroners' or medical examiners' office.
2. You have a business -- preferably a water damage business, a carpet cleaning business, or a mortuary business.
3. You have a lot of money and those around you don't mind watching you rot on the vine.

If you search long enough you will find "crime scene cleanup companies" that promise you all sorts of goodies. What they don't tell you is that you will not work unless they send you to work, and if they send you to work they will not pay you.

Now, suppose what I say means zero, nada, nothing. Suppose I'm trying to keep all the wealth to myself. Have you thought in these terms yet? Well, you should. Maybe I am a big fat lier.
