Georgia is often referred to as the "Empire State of the South." It is rich in resources, natural and human.

Before the Spanish explorers arrived in Georgia, Native Americans like the Creek and Cherokee lived upon the land. These tribes enjoyed Georgia's rich plant and animal life. They also enjoyed rich cultural backgrounds as their languages grew to suit their environment.

After the Spanish arrived in the 1500s, the English founded the first non-native settlement and called it "Savannah."

Georgia was the fourth state to join the Union and the fifth state to leave for the Confederate States. It was General Sherman that practically leveled Atlanta.

Jimmy Carter was governor of Georgia and became the United State's thirty-ninth president. President Carter failed to win re-election and subsequently devoted his life to human welfare projects. Also, President Carter recognized grave environmental problems growing in the United States and elsewhere in the world. While president, President Carter worked hard to encourage "soft technology" so that humanity might start to live more carefully on Earth.

President Carter was the first president to install solar panels on the White House. He did this to use the White House for others to see the White House as a model for conservation and self-reliance. At the end of his first term, President Carter lost the presidency to Ronald Reagan. Presidnet Reagan had little or no interest in conservation or environmental problems. In fact, he removed President Carters solar panels from the White House.

President Reagan was not a bad man, but he was very naive. In fact, it was President Reagan's administration that trained and armed the Taliban in Afghanistan, besides other fierce, tribal, fundamentalist fighters. Some people might say that President Reagan was a "linear thinker" because he did not think about the unforeseen consequences of one act. Such is the case with his own understanding of nature: If you have seen one redwood tree, you have seen them all, he said. He did not understand that a forest is very complex and has many plants, animals, and organisms living within it that cannot be replaced, duplicated, or in anyway cloned.
