Health Risks of Tear Gas Exposure
Exposure to tear gas can pose serious health risks, both immediate and long-term. Tear gas is designed to irritate the mucous membranes, causing symptoms such as burning eyes, excessive tearing, coughing, shortness of breath, and skin irritation. Prolonged or repeated exposure can lead to more severe respiratory issues and chemical burns. These symptoms are particularly dangerous for individuals with preexisting conditions such as asthma or chronic respiratory diseases, which is a primary reason professional tear gas removal is necessary. Additionally, tear gas residues that remain in enclosed spaces or on surfaces can continue to pose health hazards if not properly removed.

A hazard is literally defined as any potentially infectious body fluids, harmful chemicals, or contaminated objects.
Examples of these include blood, pepper spray (compounds in the spray can leave sticky, potentially harmful residue), fingerprint powder (potentially carcinogenic chemicals), human excrement (after the bowels are evacuated), contaminated hypodermic needles (in event of an overdose) or glass (e.g. a broken window).
All investigators or law enforcement officers are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) due to the presence of bloodborne pathogens. Bloodborne pathogens are potentially infectious body fluids that need to be handled, treated, transported, and disposed of according to protocol.
